Masculine Identity

Masculinity: a set of qualities, characteristics or roles generally considered typical of, or appropriate to, a man. A near-synonym of masculinity is virility. Constructs of masculinity vary across historical and cultural contexts.

A trans man (also trans-man or transman) is a female-to-male (F.T.M.) transgender or transsexual person. A trans man is assigned female at birth, but identifies as male. As many masculine identities exist as there are people who identify in some way with masculinity.

Personal Stories

Learning from those who have gone before can be a great way to ease anxiety levels and reduce the isolation that one may feel while questioning their gender options or even while in transition. Reading personal stories of other guys at different stages of transition, learning how others have dealt with issues like disclosing one's intentions to loved ones, coping with relationship issues, hormone issues, learning to live with increased aggression and libido or discussing surgery options or just getting along in the wider community.

Mentors can be hard to find but fortunately a number of trans guys have put pen to paper and shared their experiences, their thoughts, and their concerns in an attempt to make life easier for those who follow in their footsteps and encounter similar issues to the ones that they have in the past. This kind of peer support can be terribly important to a transitioning transman. We remain very grateful to those that have shared their stories.

Relationships

History tells us that relationships in which one of the partners discloses their transgender status, or their intentions to transition, can experience some turbulence that may unfortunately become the catalyst for some uncertain outcomes. This is true not only for intimate relationships with partners, but also relationships between the transgender person and their parents, their siblings, their children, extended family and friends.

Fortunately, a number of trans guys and their partners, family and friends have kindly put pen to paper in an attempt to make life easier for those who follow in their footsteps and encounter similar issues in their relationships that they already have.

Oftentimes the relationships that transgender people share with their loved ones strengthen following disclosure of the innermost feelings expressed by the trans person. Time given to listen and understand each other is of the utmost importance, and this goes for all relationships, not only those involving partners.

People

Some well-known, some not, and so have many female cross-dressers and others who experimented with their expression of gender for many reasons including taking on typical masculine employment and pastimes like becoming warriors, hunters and military personnel during wartime.

This section already contains, or will contain the stories of many well-known and lesser-known transmen like Michael Dillon, Harry Crawford, Patrick Califia, Loren Cameron, Leslie Feinberg, Stephen Whittle, Jamison Green, Pope Joan, Maria Bochkareva, Billy Tipton, Brandon Teena, Buck Angel, Chaz Bono, Sir Ewan Forbes, Alan Hart, Charley Parkhurst and Lucas Silveira.
